简评

Depending on whom you ask, food at Purdue can be either excellent or inedible. On the whole, students seem to agree that Ford and Earhart are by far the best dining courts. The Union food, though overpriced, is good and easily accessible. If all else fails, there are numerous mini-marts to purchase microwave dinners, and there are grills for hamburgers, french fries, and other staples. You’ll find that upperclassmen living in apartments will often have nostalgic flashbacks to their residence hall days, and use their underclassmen friends to get into the Dining Courts.

Purdue’s award-winning dining courts serve the best food possible while still keeping nutrition in mind. They are well organized, hygienic, and create a great atmosphere for students to gather. Some students are strictly against preserved foods like tinned pineapples and do not speak well of the dining courts. At times, especially near major holidays such as Easter and Thanksgiving, dining court menus deteriorate and end up disastrous. Overall though, the dining courts do a great job in providing Purdue students with maximum amount of food to choose from.

Purdue’s multi-billion dollar campaign has resulted in numerous renovations around the campus, including the Recreational Sports Center, the residence hall dining rooms, the computer labs, and the libraries. The athletic facilities are top-notch, with basketball courts, a new aquatics center, an enormous cardiovascular area, tracks, racquetball courts, and more. The libraries have undergone a tremendous overhaul, leaving them streamlined and organized. Purdue Memorial Union is one of the central points on campus, with bowling and billiards in the basement, as well as a large food court with areas to study and hang out with friends. The general consensus of the students is that the facilities, which were not so bad to begin with, have improved by leaps and bounds over the past several years and will continue to do so.

The campus itself is compact, charming, and clean. Although it is large enough to accommodate the over 30,000 attending students, the layout is so well organized that a student can walk from one end of campus to the other within 15 to 20 minutes. The campus is filled with foliage and is particularly lovely during spring. But, for sheer uniqueness, check out Purdue’s famous fountains; they’re designed to be aesthetically pleasing, but also are fun to run through with a group of friends on a sweltering day.

Ladies and gentlemen, the consensus is in: no matter who or what you’re attracted to, you’ll be able to find it at Purdue. The girls come out the definite winners; with about one-and-a-half men to each woman, the odds are in your favor, ladies. And it seems that the ratio is not the only thing going for you; according to Purdue’s female population, the men aren’t too hard on the eyes. Gentlemen, Purdue is not without its share of female beauties. After all, the former Miss Indiana and her first runner-up were both students of Purdue, and a jaunt past any sorority house will show you that, indeed, pretty women are everywhere. Don’t think of the unfair girl-to-guy ratio as a deterrent; instead, think of it as a challenge.

While Purdue does not appear to host the sexiest population in the Big Ten, students will say that, overall, people are rather attractive. An underlying grumble about Abercrombie & Fitch wearers permeates this agreement (alongside the eternal complaint that anybody worth looking at is already taken), but it seems that there are plenty of down-to-earth, straight-shooting students to offset the preppy population. The author’s final thought? On a campus of 30,000 people your own age, it is mathematically certain that you will find at least one of these other students attractive.

West Lafayette revolves around Purdue University and very little else. The tranquility of West Lafayette serves Purdue students in the best way possible, allowing them to focus on their academics without many distractions. However, the Lafayette area is filled with restaurants, parks, historical attractions, and other diversions that are very similar to other medium-sized cities in the nation. Keeping an open mind and stretching your imagination will net you with plenty of activities. And if all else fails, Indianapolis is only an hour’s drive away.

To most students, hanging out with their buddies on significant places like Memorial Mall and the Union are the most amusing. When the weather is warm, nothing beats getting a bunch of friends and running through the famous fountains. Greater Lafayette has numerous places to walk, especially the walking bridge that connects West Lafayette and Lafayette over the Wabash River. When winter hits, head over to the outdoor skating rink at the Wabash Landing, or grab a sled (or lunch tray from the dining halls) and sled down Slayter Hill. Don’t let your laziness conquer you. You are here for a very short time and are responsible to make the best of it. If you’re friends opt for a walk around campus at 3 a.m., go for it! At Purdue, fun can be created out of anything.

Nightlife at Purdue revolves almost entirely around that most proverbial of watering holes: the bar. With a handful of bars within walking distance of campus, students of legal age have their pick of places to go for socializing, drinking, and hanging out with their friends. Although there are no clubs in the Greater Lafayette area, several of the bars have dance floors that add a hint of variety to the bar scene. Students under the age of 21 who want to edge their way into the bar scene will have little luck, thanks to the bouncers who require two valid forms of ID. However, there are plenty of house parties in nearby apartments, and most can go to fraternity parties with a little finagling.

Those who are able to get into the bars and drink seem relatively pleased with the accommodations around campus. The Neon Cactus, with its huge drinks, dance floor, and piano bar, is the number one spot on Thursday nights, followed closely by Harry’s, the Egyptian Hookah Bar and Café, and Jake’s. Get to the bars early if you want a seat; otherwise, you’ll be squashed up against the wall by the mass of people pouring into the building. If you’re looking for clubs, you won’t find any at Purdue, except for some remotely located in the Lafayette area. Indianapolis, however, in only an hour's drive away and caters well to nightlife.

The Greater Lafayette area boasts hundreds of restaurants catering to every food preference imaginable. Students seem more impressed with restaurants that are near the Purdue campus such as Jake’s, McDonald's, and Panda Express. Since these restaurants are so close to Purdue, it sometimes seems that they’re on-campus dining rather than off-campus dining. There are some distinctive restaurants around Purdue as well, such as Harry’s Chocolate Shop and Triple XXX. These spots are distinctive Purdue landmarks and hold a special place in many students' memories. While their food may not necessarily be student favorites, every Purdue student makes sure to pay a visit to these places at least once during their college years.

If you want to head to Lafayette’s more upscale dining locations, it’ll require a car, which can be a deterrent to freshmen without transportation. Some of the nicer restaurants, such as Bistro 501 and Lafayette Brewing Company, can be quite pricey for those on a budget; however, there are plenty of unique burger joints within walking distance of the central campus that are affordable and popular student hangouts. Restaurants serving ethnic food such as Chinese, Korean, and Indian tend to be highly overpriced and thus are not as popular as places like McDonald's and Burger King.

The University area has a huge amount of housing to offer. Apartment complexes are lucky to get 85 percent occupancy, which means housing sometimes becomes more affordable as fall semester approaches. However, most students will tell you that the best time to start looking for apartments is as soon as you decide to move off campus. Students who chose to live off campus are overwhelmingly happy with their decision. Off-campus housing at Purdue can mean an apartment that’s a five-minute walk to campus, and it is much cheaper than living in University residence halls.

Students may grumble slightly about the price of off campus living at Purdue, but the prices you will pay at West Lafayette are much lower than apartments at other colleges, especially with so many apartment complexes fighting each other for business. Also, since many apartments are within walking distance of campus, and shuttles run for free from campus to the major apartment complexes, a car is more of a luxury than a necessity. Purdue has provided a major housing boom for the city. Many old homes situated near campus buildings are bought by property managers and renovated into efficiencies. These types of housing options are usually the best, as the houses are newly re-modeled and available at a lesser price than a proper apartment building. It is fairly easy to find an apartment that suits your needs, as they are abundant.

Purdue is no exception to the rule of unpredictable Midwestern weather. Seasons change here on weekly basis. It can be hot and humid on Monday and snowing by Sunday. Typically, it’s quite warm for the first few weeks of school and then mellows into autumn, with crisp air and brightly colored leaves. Winter is snowy and bitterly cold, with blustery gales and treacherous ice and temperatures dropping as low as negative 40. Spring comes begrudgingly with thunderstorms and temperatures that vacillate from torrid to freezing overnight, but eventually settles into a temperate period before the sweltering summer begins again.

Purdue students don’t let the temperamental weather rule their lives, though. At any time during the school year (except when the weather hits negative 40), you can see students outside enjoying seasonal activities like football games, snowball fights, sunbathing, and tennis. The key to overcoming the weather at Purdue is to be prepared. Check the temperatures on your computers or laptops every morning and always dress accordingly. If at the end of spring semester you’re wearing your winter coat, or if you’re sporting shorts in December, don’t be too surprised.

Purdue’s Ivy League-sounding title belies its public standing, but aptly describes its challenging curriculum. Purdue’s engineering, management, and agricultural schools attract students from around the nation and the world because of their high academic reputation. It appears that most of the teachers are friendly and willing to help a student in need. However, in a lecture class of 600, some freshmen may feel like a grain of sand in a desert. The biggest complaint of Purdue students is the plethora of foreign teaching assistants whose accents are almost incomprehensible, and teachers who have an overestimated opinion of their personal importance. However, students are quick to note that, overall, the teachers at Purdue are excellent and have a firm knowledge of the subjects they teach. In the heart of right-wing conservative Indiana, there lies Purdue which seems to be a little town of wonders; with people all around the globe gathered in the middle of a corn-field. The feeling of being here is amazing.

As a Big Ten school, Purdue’s curriculum is top-notch. It can be challenging, but it is manageable, depending on your field of study and how you manage your time. The concept of easy and hard majors is very remote at Purdue. Especially with renowned professors from around the world, all majors are equally difficult in their own way. Just remember to keep an open mind, attend classes, and take notes. Your professors may seem unapproachable at first, especially in the lower-level large lecture classes, but remember that their office hours have been made for a reason. Purdue provides its students with dozens of opportunities. Your job is to take advantage of them.
