佐治亚理工学院georgia Institute of technology学校概况 佐治亚理工学院georgia Institute of technology简称georgia tech,1885年建校。 以前有人私下把georgia tech称做"mit of the south"。不过gatech的人自尊太强, 奋起 反击,反而公开喊出了:"mit: georgia tech of the north"的口号,流风所及, 连mit的人也常常幽默一把,称自己的学校为"georgia tech of the north"。

While the dining halls are definitely no place to take a date, or anyone for that matter, to have a nice meal, they are adequate for everyday use. Georgia Tech is served by two dining halls, Brittain and Woodruff, which are located at opposite ends of the campus. The quality of the food has improved steadily over the last five years. Breakfast food is always your best bet at these dining halls, and students are free to make their own sandwiches and salads at the salad bar, if they choose to do so.

For a satisfying lunch or breakfast with a professor, friend, coworker, or anyone else, there are always two choices on campus: the Student Center Commons and the Student Center Food Court. Both the Student Center Commons and Food Court offer an exceptional variety of choices for lunch, including Chick-fil-A, Burger King, Jackets, and even a Starbucks.

The Student Center is the hub of student activity on campus. Located in the middle of campus, it houses a computer cluster, the music listening room, a food court, a ballroom and a theater. Many functions are held in the ballroom, and the theater regularly holds free screenings of popular movies, along with occasional concerts. The Student Center also houses Burdell’s, which is similar to a convenience store, and the campus post office. The CRC really is as great as it sounds. It has so many different activities and equipment available to students, ranging from a water slide to karate classes.

The library is also a very popular place on campus. It is a bit out-dated, but it is still incredibly useful. It has two computer clusters, one of which is very good for group work, a meeting room, and a space that students can reserve to practice multimedia presentations. Many students go to the library to study, as it has six floors full of tables and spaces to study, but it is also a very social place. Many come to study with their friends, but beware: The higher you go in floors, the quieter you have to be!

Typical Tech students are very hard-working and highly- motivated, regardless of their gender. Georgia Tech has a small contingent of stereotypical, laid-back, party-animal guys and girls. However, many guys tend to follow more of an academic persuasion and are not as interested in large social events. It is possible that many of the guys would be apt to considering themselves “loners.” Guys at Georgia Tech outnumber girls by almost three to one.

Girls at Georgia Tech are usually exceptionally intelligent and enthusiastic about their course of study, but they are generally more socially inclined. Sorority girls are very social, almost without exception, which works well for like-minded guys; however, fraternity guys are not all so socially minded, as fraternities exist for many different reasons (business, ethnicity, academics, etc.). In the end, though, any grade on the fairer sex suffers because there are just so few of them.

Georgia Tech is in the heart of midtown Atlanta, which provides a very urban environment for students. Along with all of the amenities and luxuries that Atlanta’s city life provides, there are also drawbacks, as is the case with any city. For example, city life in general can sometimes be dangerous. However, Atlanta is an exciting city with a vibrant local music scene, which has helped produce the likes of John Mayer and Collective Soul; four major league sports teams; and several attractions. Atlanta is the biggest and fastest-growing city in the Southeast, and students will always have access to a wealth of options for entertainment.

In addition to benefiting from a vibrant social scene, Georgia Tech’s learning environment is enhanced by the presence of a well-integrated community of other universities and colleges. The libraries at Georgia State University, Emory University, and the University of Georgia work in tandem with Georgia Tech’s, and provide students at all schools within the University System of Georgia with a wide variety of research tools and resources.

Tech is known for not being a party school, but, as in most cases, it’s all in who you know. The school only has 12,000 undergraduate students, compared to the 30,000 to 40,000 students at most state universities. Tech is known as a research institute, and consequently, the social scene might seem a little lame for people who expect to find a party on every corner on any given night. Tech students still know how to have a good time, and parties usually boast live music, lots of people, and plenty of fun.

Off campus, the bar and club scenes are more than enough to add spice to student life. Charlie G’s is a favorite hangout for Tech students. They have excellent sandwiches, buffalo wings, and salads. For a good bar experience in midtown, you can try the Prince of Wales or Café Intermezzo. The local hot spot for bars is in an area called Virginia Highlands, east of campus along Virginia Avenue and North Highland Avenue. Limerick Junction, an Irish pub on North Highland, boasts live music of the Irish persuasion and an open mic on Tuesdays. If you don’t have Irish in your blood, however, you can step over to Blind Willy’s next door, and enjoy a night of blues at the South’s best blues club. If neither of those fit the bill, Dark Horse Tavern, a popular club and bar, is located on the same block.

Restaurants are plentiful off campus, but a car is a necessity, as Atlanta is not a college town and is not overly friendly to pedestrians. Buckhead, an area of Atlanta just north of campus, serves as the entertainment center of the city and holds a variety of choices for those looking for a good meal.

For lunch or just a quick meal, there is also an array of choices near campus. Willy’s Mexicana Grill offers big, California-style burritos and tacos for about six to eight dollars. For those that crave Mexican fast food, there is also Moe’s. Eats, a popular stop for starving Tech students, offers spaghetti, chicken, vegetables, and a slew of other foods. In addition to all this, the Howell Mill Road vicinity, just north of campus on Interstate 75, is home to all the usual fast food stops, including Taco Bell, Arby’s, and Chick-fil-A, the local favorite.

Housing off campus is reasonably convenient, and is necessary for many students who cannot get housing on campus after freshman year. The best deal is in Centennial Place Apartments, located between Luckie Street and Techwood Avenue, which is also called Centennial Olympic Park Drive. These apartments are a mere 5- to 10-minute walk from campus, making a car unnecessary for the everyday commute to class. For affordable rent at any development, roommates are necessary. If one is willing to endure a short drive to campus each day, a variety of choices for housing is available in the vicinity of Northside Drive or Howell Mill Road, just north of campus.

For safety, it is usually advisable not to venture too far south of campus on Northside Drive for housing. If you must, stay in the midtown and downtown areas. Usually, rent and utilities for an apartment off campus are less expensive than the cost of a dorm room on campus. Apartments are also much larger and offer various other amenities that students might enjoy, such as laundry facilities, private workout equipment, hot tubs, and pools.

Weather in Atlanta is always humid, and it’s generally mild in the winter and harsh in the summer. Temperatures in winter occasionally fall below 30 degrees during the day, while temperatures between June and August routinely rise above 90 degrees. During the spring and fall, the temperature can be extremely unpredictable. Droughts are common during the summers, and rain is usually unpredictable throughout the year. One should note that the high humidity makes temperatures harsher than they would be in locations with less humidity.

Take it from someone who knows—those who have problems with pollen and hay fever in the spring should keep their allergy prescriptions filled all the time. The weather here has made some claim that they’re simply allergic to Atlanta. However, if you are tired of harsh winters and enjoy a warm climate, then you won’t have a problem with Georgia Tech.

If you choose to attend Georgia Tech, you can expect that the professors in any given course of study will be among the most recognized and respected names in their fields. Doctorates from Princeton, MIT, Stanford, CalTech, and Georgia Tech roam the halls, instructing the next generation’s leading scientists and engineers. Having come from demanding academic backgrounds themselves, Georgia Tech professors are notorious for being stingy with grades. With that said, the vast majority of these professors will do their best to accommodate unforeseen difficulties and problems, if they are informed. Most large classes are constructed with one professor that oversees several teaching assistants, or TAs. The professor is obligated to carry on the regular lectures and the general administration of the class, but each TA is given charge over a small subset of students. Most of the interaction that takes place in the course is experienced between the students and these TAs. TAs are generally very helpful, since they were also students not long ago.

More specifically, different fields of study usually beget different breeds of professors. Social science professors are generally much more supportive than math professors. Engineering professors always require a lot of homework and are usually difficult on tests and exams. Physics professors are known for being vicious. Computer science professors are usually very helpful and are always very knowledgeable, but their TAs are very strict and sometimes not helpful. Overall, you will be expected to learn things without supervision, and you will be held to very high standards.

[There Is Much Fun to Have Here, However the Course Work Can Hamper That] : The school experience is great so far. There are many decent and no judgmental people at this school so its great for people who didn't fit the mold in high school. The course work is tedious however since Georgia tech is one of the best engineering schools in the US.There aren't many parties on campus but there parties at the neighboring schools such as Georgia State or Emory. Overall it is not a disappointing experience if you are able to balance the work effectively. Tue Feb 14 08:00:00 UTC 2012
[Around Campus Transport Is Great, Off Campus Not So Much] : Despite being in the Atlanta area, the public transportation is poor. Do not expect it to be like New York city. The buses are infrequent and the taxi prices are a bit high. There is a train station in walking distance from the campus and does come in very pretty handy to go places. The train also goes directly to the Airport so its convenient for people who travel often. Its best to get around however by car to the pubs, bars, and night life areas. The on campus transportation is great, the school has it private shuttles that are usually on time and frequent. Tue Feb 14 08:00:00 UTC 2012
[Saftey of the Georgia Tech Campus] : The georgia Tech campus is in the middle of Atlanta and there is freedom of access for anyone to enter the campus. This makes the campus relatively unsafe at nights if you are not smart or careful. There are many police officers paroling the campus to keep it safe however it does not keep the crime 100% at bay. The best suggestion is to always walk with a friend at late nights and stay in well lit areas.Furthermore, there is a Georgia tech transport system designated for late night so technically no student needs to walk across campus late at night if they are worried. Most crime occurs when the victim is walking alone at very late nights. Final note the crime is usually to always petty theft and robbery. Tue Feb 14 08:00:00 UTC 2012
[Mechanical Engineering.] : The ME school at Georgia Tech is the largest engineering school here. Because of that, lots of money has been investing in it and there are lots of awesome opportunities that are available to students. After the first year or two, you begin to come familiar with people in your classes and build community. Thu Feb 09 08:00:00 UTC 2012
[Parking: Be Careful.] : Parking on campus can be a pain. Permits are very expensive (it is downtown Atlanta). With permits, parking is very convenient and simple. Visitor parking can also be frustrating as only certain parking areas open up on nights and weekends. Thu Feb 09 08:00:00 UTC 2012
